Urban Sketching

Intro to Urban Sketching Session 2: June 16, 18, 23 & 25

Introduction to Urban Sketching with Flagstaff Sketcher Toni Prothero, 4 sessions $80

Have you ever wanted to capture your travel adventures in a sketchbook? Whether exploring a new city or becoming more connected to your own home town, on location sketching is a creative opportunity to connect with people and places, record your travels in a uniquely personal way and develop new artistic skills and techniques. This four session workshop series explores materials and supplies to help you sketch on location, as well as basic techniques of watercolor sketching.

Learn the principles and develop the skills that allow urban sketchers to capture cityscapes, people, cars, landscapes, food, and all the amazing things we come across in urban areas.

Time and Place
Sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays over 2 consecutive weeks from 3:00-5:00 PM at Visible Difference Art Supply. Session 2 is June 16, 18, 23, and 25. Please arrive a few minutes early if you need supplies so we can start together and to make the most of our time. There will be opportunity at 5 PM to explore downtown Flagstaff as a group.

Cost
$80 per person for a 2 week session, cash or check only payable to Toni Prothero.

Materials
For each session we will be both indoors, learning skills and techniques, and outdoors putting them into practice. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Items are available at Visible Difference. For your Urban Sketching kit, you will need:
• A watercolor sketchbook, preferably hardbound with heavyweight paper and reasonably sized for easy transporting, 9”x 6” is a size that works well, though it could be a bit smaller or larger if you prefer. Canson Montval is a good choice as it is sturdy enough to handle washes and not warp.
• Small sketchpad for thumbnail drawings and notes, 3×5 to 6×9.
• Brushes: watercolor brushes #2, 4, or 6; #10 or #12; #18 or #20. (3 brushes S M L).
• Alternatively, water brushes are convenient for on location sketching.
• Watercolor travel paint set such as the Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers’
Pocket Box, the Daniel Smith sketch kit, or the Koi set. You may use a different watercolor set, of course, but I recommend that you have a cool and a warm version of each of the primaries, as well as burnt or raw sienna or umber, and yellow ochre.
• Pens and pencils: One soft graphite pencil: 3B, 4B or 5B and two black ink pens: .3mm and .5mm
• Small spray bottle
• Water bottle
• 2-3 paper towels or napkins
• Kneaded eraser
• Water container unless you choose to use water brushes. This could be the bottom cut off a soda bottle, a small empty tin or a top-of-the-line collapsible cup from Visible Difference. As long as it holds about a cup of water.
• A fanny pack, messenger-style pouch or bag or a backpack that can carry your supplies.
• A portable stool or chair for outdoors is optional unless you are comfortable standing while you sketch. Some people are!
